Going to college means a new beginning. One of the many dilemma’s male students face is whether or not to join a fraternity. People don’t realize that fraternities are a huge part of the college experience. Fraternities help students get involved socially throughout the campus as well as assist them their academics.
Joining a fraternity means meeting a whole new group of people with all different personalities. This group of people over time, will likely develop into what some people call a “brotherhood”. A brotherhood basically means a very close group of friends. My friend Idan Ghazanfari, who has been in a fraternity at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign for 3 years now, has told me countless times that I should highly consider joining one when I go away to college. Joining a fraternity means being highly involved on campus and in the community. This means going to intramural games, cookouts, tailgating, sports events, and attending the casual parties hosted by the fraternities themselves.

One thing people are often unaware of about fraternities is where they come from. Fraternities can be traced all the way back to ancient Greece when groups of men and women would group together for prayer or to be closer to the catholic church. Now, fast forward several hundred years to the late 19th century, where a more modern interpretation of fraternities was created; During this time period, students at numerous colleges began to group up to discussion
literature and current events. They were fed up with the strict curriculum and wanted to expand their knowledge outside the topics discussed in the classroom.
