Freshman Issues Commonly Faced
When you’re going away to college you have a lot on your mind. It’s your first time living alone and you have what most incoming freshmen have, anxiety. There are numerous issues freshmen face within that first year of their college experience.
The first major problem the average freshmen encounters is emotional stress. Homesickness is usually what the cause is. You’ve been home all your life and the first year that your out on your own you just start to miss how things used to be. You miss your friends, family, and the everyday life you had.
College forces a lot of responsibilities out of no where on you. Another factor that could make this emotional stress worse is how far away you are from your home. If your studying 100 miles away from home, you could drive home on the weekends. However, if you were studying 500 miles away then that wouldn’t be too easy. It would also make the time that you see your family much shorter. The only way to heal this stress is to give it time. Over the course of your freshman year, you will adjust to your new lifestyle and hopefully relieve that stress.

Physical challenges could also be a potential problem for you in the future. The phrase “Freshman 15” is said to be true in many articles. A study from the University of Washington in St. Louis found that 70 percent of students gained a significant amount of weight during college. For some people this could also be the first time you decide what you eat every day. Again, with gaining all this new freedom what often follows is irresponsible decisions. You could say that dining halls are to blame because they serve a buffet but its you who makes the decision. Another reason why physicality might become a problem is because you may no longer participate in sports which means you will be much less active.
